Mater, designed by Patricia Urquiola for Mutina, is a deeply tactile and expressive porcelain tile collection inspired by the artisanal floor of Mutina’s own meeting room. Urquiola reinterprets that handcrafted aesthetic through advanced industrial glazing and Continua technology, resulting in surfaces that feel both raw and refined. The collection features two matte, unglazed base tiles—Uni Beige and Uni Moka—paired with six glossy patterned variants known as Segno, each defined by an irregular, raised decorative motif with strong visual rhythm.
Mater’s identity lies in the dialogue between texture, glaze, and colour. The decorative Segno tiles are produced using a high-gloss glaze that highlights the relief and enhances the hand-drawn geometric movement of the pattern. On top of the neutral base modules, Segno is developed into six distinctive tones: Segno Bianco, Segno Blu, Segno Terra, Segno Nero, Segno Verde, and Segno Ocra. These elements mix and match seamlessly, allowing designers to create highly personalised compositions ranging from minimalist to richly layered spaces.
Available in three generous sizes—120×120 cm, 60×60 cm, and 15×60 cm—Mater is engineered for both residential and commercial settings, indoors and outdoors. Its strong materiality, glossy relief detailing, and sophisticated colour palette make it ideal for architectural surfaces, feature walls, hospitality environments, and expressive interior design.
Together, Mater’s finishes and formats create a surface that feels timeless, architectural, and inherently tactile - celebrating ceramic craftmanship through modern production.
