With the tenacious perseverance of a single mom, a vision for realizing trends before they became in vogue and a deposit from their first customer, Sylvia established Stone Tile International in 1991 with co-founder Carl Hesse. At the time it was unheard of for a woman to lead a building materials company, which was considered, and is often still considered, very much a man’s world. A pioneer and visionary, Sylvia noticed an untapped niche for exotic materials such as premium limestone, marble and slate, whose interest was beginning to grow among leading contractors, builders and architects. During the first few years, she tackled everything from sales calls and cutting samples to accounting and driving a forklift. In the early 2000s, Sylvia recruited and trained a likeminded group of independent, trailblazing women to create a sales force to be reckoned with. While many have tried to replicate the company’s success and Sylvia’s concept that “tiles are to the design world what fabrics are to haute couture,” Stone Tile has always differentiated itself by staying on the leading edge of design and sourcing “tomorrow’s products today.”
Daniel Sultan
President
From the age of 14, when he started working in the Stone Tile warehouse, Daniel knew he was going to be an integral part of the family business co-founded by his mother Sylvia. Armed with a passion for making an indelible impact on peoples’ lives and an Honors BA from the University of Toronto, Daniel learned all facets of the surfaces business: from corporate sales and showroom marketing to creating a project management division, which functions as a key customer concierge, and leading transformative cultural improvements that foster collaboration. Daniel has also expanded Stone Tile’s business footprint through product diversification, introducing wood, vinyl and slab products and geographically via expansion to Montreal. As a result of these investments, Stone Tile now has best-in-class operations on par with any leading industry and is well-positioned for growth into the U.S. market. Daniel’s next challenge is to direct the company’s new e-commerce platform, which will help fulfil his vision to make ease and convenience a hallmark of Stone Tile and ensure it will once again lead the way in transforming the industry to create boundless opportunities across North America and beyond.
